Sally was born and raised in Thanet. She loved the area so never left and now she raises her young sons here. Sally has been baking since she was about 6. Her mother used to make mince pies at Christmas and Sally loved watching her, that's where her passion started, eventually she learnt to make them with her mother and they'd bake all sorts of treats including apple crumbles and blackberry pies in the summer. Her mother hated cooking but when she was in her teens she won several local community baking competitions so maybe that’s where Sally inherited it from. Sally spent her younger years messing up her mum's kitchen and using her family as human Guinea pigs on her "new food inventions.” At school she chose to do food technology as one of her options and part of her assessment was to modify a recipe. It could have been any food recipe but she chose cake. Cheesecake to be exact. She had to change 3 different aspects. So she experimented with different biscuits on the base, different flavour fillings and different fats in the biscuit base. So her poor family endured weeks of cheesecakes, testing them for her until they were sick of them and she had finally mastered the perfect flavour combination. Thankfully for them she went onto college studied for 3 years in hospitality, patisserie and confectionery where they no longer had to test her products. She learnt many many skills, her favourite being chocolate tempering and sugar work. In her hospitality management training she was still a little undecided in which route to take. She wanted to open up her own restaurant or hotel but once she had reached 3rd year at college and did the patisserie and confectionery course, she knew she just wanted to make cakes. She wanted to open a tea room and make lots of amazing bakes. But all this was put on the back burner as she fell in love, got married and had children. Over the next 10 years she continued her job as a waitress and then became a stay at home mum to two wonderful boys, only baking for friends and family. The children then became new guinea pigs for her birthday cake ideas that she’d seen other bakers make. She longed to get back into baking, making wonderful cakes and bakes that people love. She loved making people happy with her cakes. Seeing a child's face light up when they’ve received the cake of their dreams, it made it all worth while for her. When Sally was pregnant with her youngest in 2015 she just had to get back into baking. She slowly began putting things in motion to start up her business. She decided it would be best to bake from home until she could find the perfect tea room. The first step she took was deciding a business name. She was pregnant - There was only one name for it. Bun In The Oven, Cakery. She wasn’t a bakery, she didn’t make steak slices or cheese and onion pies, she made cakes. So she chose to be known as a Cakery. Over the next 4 years she practiced, taught her children to bake and invested in more tools and equipment. Sally began preparing herself for the moment her youngest son started school. The minute he started school, would be the minute her cakery doors opened to the public. Finally Sally's dream is a reality. She can now share that with her family and make more people happy
